In general terms a biomarker is “any substance, structure or process that can be measured in the body or its products and influence or predict the incidence or outcome of a disease. Biomarkers can be classified into markers of exposure, effect and susceptibility” (WHO International Program on Chemical Safety).

Another definition by the NIH Biomarker Definitions Working Group defines biomarkers as “a characteristic that can be measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biologic processes, pathological processes or pharmacologic responses to therapeutic intervention”.
